Senate Confirmation of Kavanaugh is a Huge Victory for Democrats

Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s elevation to the Supreme Court is a tremendous defeat for democracy and probably a serious low point for our country. At least it is a low point in terms of things we have done to ourselves. Pearl Harbor was at the hands of the Japanese, 9-11 at the hands of the Saudis and 11/9/16 at the hands of the Russians.

That the Senate Republicans have lost their independence and their ability to apply the rule of law is staggering.

It is possible to think of many directions where this goes from here – both in the near term and in the long term – and none of them is positive.

But, one thing is clear. One day in the future, the Democrats or some other opposition party is going to gain control of Congress. They will then have the power to impeach a sitting Supreme Court nominee.

I can think of no more unifying or healing action that the Democrats will do than to impeach the justice who will be the deciding vote in sending the US back to a different century.

And, the Republicans stupidly are going to make it easy for them by putting a Justice on the Supreme Court who is not only divisive but a suspected sex offender.

Christine Blasey Ford testified with 100% credibility that she was assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh. That testimony and that of others with similar allegations doesn’t go away with the completion of a bogus FBI investigation. Rather, it is a flashing red light and will be a built-in roadmap to impeach Kavanaugh until the day it finally happens.

The Republicans had their chance to stack the Supreme Court for generations to come. They blew it. Let’s hope they don’t have another.
