This is a good blog post with some history of past bank failures and what we may expect in the future. A chart shows how bad it got in the late 80's and early 90's. Hope it doesn't get that bad this time.

There are also some interesting observations about IndyMac:

According to the FDIC, there were $18 billion in insured deposits and "over" 200,000 depositors. If we divide $18 billion by 200 thousand, this gives an average deposit of $90,000.
